Bird causes Gardiner power outage

An enterprising osprey knocked out power to 150 customers in Gardiner on June 24 when it attempted to build a nest on top of a power pole.

According to Central Lincoln People’s Utility District spokesman Stuart Jarmain, about 150 customers lost power at 3 a.m. when a tree branch crossed two hot wires on top of a utility pole.

Power was restored at 6 a.m., he said.

The nest was nowhere near completion and contained no baby osprey, Jarmain said, so crews were able to knock it apart. They also erected some guards to prevent future building projects.

The winged culprit was nowhere to be found, Jarmain said. Assault arrest

Reedsport police arrested a Reedsport man June 24 on assault-related charges.

According to the Reedsport police bulletin, officers responded at about 1:08 p.m. to a report of ongoing domestic abuse at 1334 Hawthorne Ave. They arrested Warren Spears, 28, on charges of fourth-degree domestic assault and strangulation. He was taken to Reedsport jail, where he was booked, lodged and later transported to Douglas County jail in Roseburg. He is being held on $10,000 bail.

ATV accident

A Eugene woman was injured June 27 in an all-terrain vehicle accident near Winchester Bay.

According to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office press release, Peggy Wiley, 36, was riding a rented 2004 Polaris Trailblazer around Half Moon Bay in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area at about 3:25 p.m. when it went onto the soft shoulder of a trail. It was Wiley’s first ATV ride and she was unable to regain control of it. The ATV rolled down a small embankment, knocking Wiley in the chest and back. She was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital with injuries to her chest, hip, arm lower leg and back, police said. She was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said this morning.

A two-vehicle accident obstructed U.S. Highway 101 in Reedsport on June 28.

According to the Reedsport police bulletin and a spokeswoman, a Geo Metro and Mazda four-door crashed at about 10:50 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 101 and 22nd Street.

The driver of the Geo, Elizabeth Campbell, 50, of Reedsport, was cited on a charge of making a dangerous left turn. Both Campbell and the other driver; Adrian Moore, 21, of Reedsport, declined medical attention, police said.
