» Law finishes sixth in triathlon

Andy Libert of Eugene won the inaugural Siuslaw River Triathlon in Mapleton last weekend. The event, a fundraiser for the Mapleton pool, drew 43 individuals and 12 three-person teams.

Libert had the top time in all three triathlon legs, blazing through the 600-yard swim in 9 minutes and 40 seconds, completing the 13.4-mile bike ride in 34:06, and finishing the 5-kilometer road run in 21:01 for a total time of 1:06:21.

That was 9 minutes and 10 seconds faster than runner-up Jacob Sylliaasen of Springfield, who was timed in 1:15:31.

Dustina Coleman of North Bend was first among women and fourth overall in 1:23:35.

The top male from the South Coast was Duncan Law of Reedsport, who finished sixth overall in 1:25:44.

State track winners Two individuals and a relay team from the South Coast won events at the Hershey State Track Meet in Eugene. Matthew Woods of Coos Bay won the 800 meters in the 11-12 age group with a time of 2 minutes, 39.97 seconds. Woods also finished third in the 100.

Claire Ledig of Bandon won the standing long jump in the 13-14 age group with a leap of 7 feet, 81⁄2 inches. Ledig also finished second in the 100 in 12.67, which would have finished second at this year’s Class 3A high school state meet.

Ledig teamed with Peyton Babb of Powers and Lindsey Wright and Ashton Mann of Reedsport to win the 4x100 relay in 53.59.

Kayak race on July 19

The first-annual Ocean Fest kayak race on the Umpqua River will be held on July 19.

Marathon and short course races will be available at Winchester Bay for pedal, paddle or wind kayaks. Entry fee is a $20 donation to the Gardiner-Reedsport Lions Club. All age groups and ability levels are welcome.   Support boats will be on the river.

The marathon will be 12 miles long, from Reedsport to Winchester Bay; and the short race will be 6.4 miles long, at Winchester Bay on the Umpqua River.

The race is sponsored by the Gardiner-Reedsport Lions and the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.
