ATV accidents

A Eugene man was injured June 21 in an all-terrain-vehicle accident on the dunes in Winchester Bay.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s log, at 1:50 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a report of an accident near the third beach access. Police said Daniel Bertram, 50,  hit a small ridge on the side of a dune while riding his 2005 Yamaha ATV and was thrown off the bike, which rolled on top of him. Bertram complained of chest and back pain and was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital. He was later taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.

As of Tuesday morning, Bertram was listed in serious condition on the hospital’s Web site.

A Washington man was injured June 22 in a motorcycle accident on the dunes in Winchester Bay.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s log, at about 11:30 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a report of an accident at the third beach access.


Police said Jesse Halfacre, 26, of Oak Harbor, Wash., was jumping his 2005 Yamaha 250 motorcycle when it lost power. The front of his motorcycle dipped down and Halfacre fell against a fallen tree and into the sand.

He was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital, then moved to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene. According to the hospital’s Web site, Halfacre was treated and released.

A Seattle man was injured June 20 in an ATV accident near Hauser.

According to the Coos County Sheriff’s log, at 1:09 p.m., personnel from the Hauser Fire Department responded to a call of an injury accident on the dunes near Hauser.

Bjorn Berkedal,18, was reportedly taken to Bay Area Hospital, where the nursing supervisor said she had no patient by that name.

A third ATV accident was reported over the weekend in Winchester Bay. According to the Reedsport Police bulletin, at 6:48 p.m. June 22, an ATV accident was reported at Half Moon Bay.

Winchester Bay firefighters and an ambulance crew responded.

Crash stalls traffic

A four-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Reedsport June 18 sent one driver to Lower Umpqua Hospital.

According to a Reedsport Police Department press log, at 12:43 p.m., officers received a report of a multiple-vehicle collision near the intersection of 101 and 13th Street. They arrived on scene to find four vehicles involved in the crash. Personnel from the Reedsport Fire Department provided traffic control.


Police dispatcher Sean Grubb said the crash did block some of the highway but he didn’t know how many lanes it obstructed.

“For a four-car collision on Highway 101, traffic was moving again within 40 minutes,” Grubb said.

He added that an ambulance transported one driver with minor injuries to the hospital. The drivers’ names, ages, cities of residence and medical conditions were unavailable at press time.

n  12:13 p.m., the 700 block of Mill Avenue, criminal mischief to a sand rail was reported.

n12:51 p.m., the 100 block of North 16th Street, a wallet was found.

n 2:17 p.m., the first block of Holly Court, two gas cans were stolen.

n 2 p.m., the 100 block of North 16th Street, a kitten was thrown from a moving vehicle.

n 2:38 p.m., the 2600 block of Longwood Drive, a theft was reported.

n 5:57 p.m., the 100 block of North Sixth Street, a radio was stolen from a vehicle.
